‘Jeopardy!’ to Launch on Amazon Prime with a New Spin-off Version

“Jeopardy!,” the iconic 60-year-old game show, is entering the streaming era. Amazon’s Prime Video has announced a spin-off of the classic show, titled “Pop Culture Jeopardy!,” marking the first time “Jeopardy!” will have a version exclusively for a major streaming service.

This spin-off represents a “brand-new twist” on the traditional format, Amazon explained in a press release on Tuesday. In this version, “Jeopardy!” will be played by teams of three while maintaining its familiar “answer-and-question” format. The categories will focus on pop culture, covering topics such as music, sports, Broadway, and even Zendaya.

The host for “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” has not yet been revealed, with Amazon stating that the announcement will come at a later date. The spin-off will be produced by Michael Davies, who also produces the original TV show.

While a premiere date has not been disclosed, episodes of “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” will stream exclusively on Prime Video, which boasts over 200 million global subscribers.

“Pop Culture Jeopardy!” is not the first spin-off of the quiz show to go to a streaming platform. About a decade ago, “Sports Jeopardy!” was released on Sony’s streaming service Crackle, although it has since been taken down.

Amazon is increasingly investing in content for its streaming platforms, including Freevee. Last year, the company spent nearly $19 billion on video and music costs, a 14% increase compared to 2022.

To help offset these costs, ads were introduced this year to all Prime Video viewers. Customers can opt to pay an additional $2.99 per month for an ad-free experience.
